Women shouldn't ignore sudden changes in their periods, bleeding after menopause, persistent bloating, abdominal pain, or unusual discharge. While not every symptom is cancer, recurring changes warrant prompt medical attention and testing.
As women age, they may experience changes in their periods, bloating, abdominal pain, or bleeding after menopause. Often, these symptoms are dismissed as "age-related." Sometimes, these symptoms can be due to more simple reasons. However, if a complaint recurs or feels different from normal, it should not be ignored. These symptoms can also be seen in cancers of the uterus, cervix, ovaries, vagina, and external genitalia.
Many women neglect their health while caring for their home and family. If their periods become irregular, it's often thought to be due to aging. If there's persistent bloating, it's often thought to be due to gas or indigestion. If there's abdominal pain, it's often considered a common aging problem. If you experience bleeding after menopause, it may be dismissed as hormonal changes.
But this isn't always the case. Some changes in your body can be signs of a serious illness. Some symptoms of cancer of the uterus, cervix, ovaries, vagina, or external genitalia may mimic simple hormonal or digestive problems. Therefore, if you notice anything unusual in your body, it's important to get it checked out.
Be careful if there's a sudden change in your menstrual cycle.
Dr. Payal Narang, gynecologist and obstetrician at Motherhood Hospital in Lullnagar, Pune, says that a sudden change in menstrual bleeding can be a serious symptom. If you notice any new changes, such as heavier bleeding than usual, longer periods, or bleeding between periods, you should consult a doctor.
Any bleeding, especially after menopause, should not be ignored. This bleeding isn't just due to age or hormonal changes. There may be other causes besides cancer. However, a medical examination is essential to determine the exact cause.
Don't Ignore Persistent Bloating
Occasionally, bloating is normal. However, if you experience persistent bloating, abdominal pain or discomfort, or feel full even after eating small amounts, you shouldn't ignore these complaints. If these symptoms have recently begun, are recurring, or gradually worsen, you should consult a doctor.
If you have recurring abdominal pain, get tested.
Abdominal pain can have many causes. Uterine cysts, endometriosis, infections, or digestive problems can also cause pain. However, if you experience persistent abdominal pain without a clear reason and it's accompanied by changes in your periods, bleeding, or urination, you should consult a doctor. There's no need to wait until the pain becomes severe. Early testing can help pinpoint the cause.
Vaginal discharge and changes in the external area are also important.
Any abnormal or persistent vaginal discharge, bloody discharge, or foul-smelling discharge should be evaluated. Furthermore, persistent itching in the external genital area, skin discoloration, sores or ulcers, cysts, or sores that don't heal should not be ignored.
Pay attention to weight loss, fatigue, and changes in urination and bowel movements.
Unexplained weight loss, persistent fatigue, or changes in urination and bowel movements are also important to pay attention to. Especially if these symptoms are accompanied by other complaints, you should talk to your doctor.
Not every symptom is cancer.
Importantly, not every symptom mentioned above is cancer. Sometimes, these symptoms may be due to simple or unrelated causes. Therefore, there's no need to panic just because you experience these symptoms. However, if they persist, it's not advisable to ignore them.
