Renault is preparing a major upgrade for its CNG lineup in India. The company is expected to introduce factory-fitted CNG versions of three popular models — the Kwid, Triber, and Kiger — over the next few years. The biggest advantage for buyers will be improved fuel efficiency, better practicality, and more usable luggage space.
Renault to Move Beyond Retrofit CNG Kits
At present, Renault offers CNG options for the Kwid, Triber, and Kiger through dealer-installed retrofit kits. However, the automaker is now planning factory-fitted CNG systems that are expected to deliver better integration, enhanced safety, and improved performance.
These new models will be built on Renault's upcoming RGEP (Renault Group Entry Platform), which has been designed to support modern fuel technologies more efficiently.
New Kwid CNG to Get a Practical Upgrade
The next-generation Kwid will move from the existing CMF-A platform to the new RGEP architecture.
Key expected highlights:
- Factory-fitted CNG system
- Improved boot space due to a lower-mounted CNG setup
- 1.0-litre petrol engine with CNG compatibility
- Five-speed manual transmission
- Possibility of an AMT automatic option in the future
The new platform will allow Renault to place the CNG cylinders underneath the vehicle, freeing up valuable luggage space.
Triber CNG to Become More Family-Friendly
The Triber has become popular among large families because of its flexible seating layout. The upcoming CNG version is expected to become even more practical.
Expected features include:
- Underbody-mounted CNG cylinders
- Better boot capacity
- More comfortable third-row seating
- 1.0-litre petrol-CNG powertrain
- Potential automatic transmission option
These upgrades could make the Triber one of the most practical CNG MPVs in its segment.
Kiger CNG to Offer SUV Practicality with Lower Running Costs
Renault's compact SUV, the Kiger, is also expected to receive a significant CNG update.
Likely improvements:
- Factory-fitted CNG system
- Larger usable boot space
- Underbody dual-cylinder setup
- 1.0-litre naturally aspirated petrol-CNG engine
- Possibility of a CNG-automatic combination
If launched, the automatic CNG variant could attract urban buyers looking for both convenience and fuel savings.
What Makes the RGEP Platform Special?
Renault introduced the RGEP platform as part of its future product strategy for India. One of its key advantages is the ability to accommodate CNG cylinders beneath the vehicle floor.
Instead of a single large cylinder occupying the boot, Renault is expected to use a dual-cylinder arrangement mounted underneath the vehicle. This design offers:
- More luggage space
- Better weight distribution
- Improved cabin practicality
- Enhanced passenger comfort
Why This Matters for Buyers
CNG vehicles are increasingly popular because of rising fuel prices and lower running costs. However, reduced boot space has always been a major drawback.
With its new-generation CNG models, Renault aims to solve that problem while offering:
- Lower fuel expenses
- More practical interiors
- Factory-backed CNG technology
- Potential automatic transmission options
