Proceedings of the Bihar Legislative Council on Monday were disrupted following a heated exchange between Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and former Chief Minister Rabri Devi, as opposition members staged a protest over the state’s law and order situation.
As soon as the House convened, members of the opposition, led by Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) MLC Rabri Devi, raised slogans alleging a deterioration in law and order across Bihar. The sloganeering prompted Chief Minister Nitish Kumar to intervene, expressing strong displeasure over the disruption.
During the exchange, the Chief Minister made remarks directed at opposition women members, including Rabri Devi, which further escalated tensions in the House. Pointing towards Rabri Devi, he questioned the opposition’s conduct and urged the Chair to take disciplinary action against members who, he said, were repeatedly disrupting proceedings.
Despite repeated appeals from Chairman Awadhesh Narayan Singh for order, opposition members continued their protest, refusing to take their seats even as the Chief Minister was speaking. The sustained uproar led to sharp verbal exchanges between treasury and opposition benches, further heating the atmosphere in the Council.
Addressing the House amid the disruptions, Nitish Kumar defended his government’s record, stating that Bihar was progressing due to cooperation with the central government. He accused the opposition of failing to contribute constructively and of resorting to disruptions instead of meaningful debate.
The Chairman subsequently adjourned the House until 2:30 p.m. due to the continued disorder. However, before adjournment, copies of the Bihar Municipal Planning Service Rules, 2025 and the Bihar Municipal Legal Service Rules, 2025 were formally laid on the table of the House.
This is not the first instance of sharp exchanges during the ongoing session. Earlier, during Assembly proceedings, the Chief Minister had engaged in a verbal confrontation with Leader of the Opposition Tejashwi Yadav, drawing criticism from opposition parties.
The incident underscores the continuing political tension between the ruling coalition and the RJD-led opposition during the current legislative session.
