In this digital age, we make payments using UPI everywhere, from tea shops to large showrooms. However, entering a UPI PIN can often be difficult when we're in a crowd or in a hurry. For security reasons, we often don't want to share our PIN in public. To address this, NPCI (National Payments Corporation of India) has made a significant change to the BHIM app. This will provide significant relief to customers.
What is the new biometric feature?
Until now, any UPI transaction required entering a 4- or 6-digit PIN. However, with the latest update, BHIM app users can now complete transactions using their smartphone's fingerprint scanner or Face ID. You can use this feature just like you would to unlock your phone.
What are the important rules and limitations?
Currently, there's a limit of ₹5,000 for this new biometric feature. If your transaction exceeds ₹5,000, you'll need to enter your UPI PIN as usual for security. Furthermore, for data security, your biometric information (fingerprint or face) isn't stored on the BHIM app servers. It resides in your phone's secure enclave, preventing data theft.
How to enable this feature? (Step-by-step guide)
To enable this feature in your BHIM app, follow the steps below.
First, update your BHIM app and open it.
Click on your profile icon in the app.
Select the bank account for which you want this feature.
There you will see the option of Biometric Pay or Enable Fingerprint/Face ID.
Enable that option and enter your phone's PIN or fingerprint.
Now, the next time you make a payment, you will get the option of Use Biometric.
What are the benefits of this feature?
This feature offers many advantages to users. It also makes transactions faster. Biometric scanning is much faster than typing in a PIN. This eliminates the fear of forgetting a PIN. Customers often have multiple bank accounts, making it difficult to remember different PINs. However, this new feature eliminates this need. Because you don't need to enter your PIN in front of anyone, the possibility of your PIN being stolen or viewed is completely eliminated.
