DA Hike 2026: Government employees will get good news before Diwali; know how much will the dearness allowance increase?

Central government employees and pensioners are awaiting an increase in dearness allowance (DA) and dearness relief (DR) effective July 2026. It was expected that the Union Cabinet meeting on October 14, 2026, would announce an increase in dearness allowance. However, no decision was made regarding the DA increase at this meeting. Therefore, employees are now focused on the government's next announcement.

With Diwali approaching, employees are hoping the government will announce a dearness allowance increase before the festival. However, no official information has been released by the government regarding this.

Meanwhile, the same meeting approved the payment of 78 days of productivity-linked bonus to eligible railway employees. The Cabinet also approved the continuation of the National Social Assistance Program (NSAP) for the next five years. Therefore, questions are now being raised about whether central government employees will receive a DA hike before Diwali and how much the dearness allowance might increase.

Why the delay in announcing the DA hike?

The central government revises dearness allowance twice a year. The first increase takes effect in January, while the second increase takes effect in July. The dearness allowance increase effective January is usually announced in March or April. The dearness allowance increase effective July is usually announced in September or October.

Previously, the government increased the dearness allowance from 58 percent to 60 percent. This increase was effective from January 1, 2026. The government issued an official order regarding this on April 22, 2026. Now, the new rate of dearness allowance, effective from July 2026, is yet to be announced. The new rate can only be considered finalized after the government issues an official order. Therefore, employees will have to wait for the government's announcement.

How is dearness allowance determined?
Inflation data is considered when determining the increase in dearness allowance for central government employees. The Consumer Price Index for Industrial Workers (AICPI-IW) is used as a basis. This index increased by 1.2 points to 154.4 in August 2026. Additionally, the annual inflation rate, which was 3.16 percent in August 2025, increased to 4.96 percent in August 2026.

This data helps us understand the inflation situation in the market. However, it cannot be said that the new rate of dearness allowance has been determined based solely on this data. The final details of the DA increase will only be clear after the government's official announcement.

Central employees and pensioners may have to
wait a little longer for the increase in dearness allowance and dearness assistance, which will come into effect from July 2026. The government has not yet provided official information about the new rates, arrears, and when the increased amount will be received.

The prospect of a dearness allowance increase has raised expectations among employees. Everyone is watching to see if the government will make an announcement before Diwali. However, it's important to wait for the government's official order before drawing any conclusions about the new rate and when the arrears will be paid.
