Budget 2026: Big announcement of 7 new High Speed Rail Corridors including Delhi to Varanasi

The 2026-27 budget presented by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman is poised to be a milestone in the history of Indian Railways. The government has presented a total budget of over ₹53 lakh crore, with a substantial ₹12 lakh crore allocated for infrastructure development. A significant portion of this investment will be spent on modernizing railways and improving connectivity. These announcements for the railway sector primarily aim to reduce freight transportation costs and accelerate the country's economic growth.

Seven new high-speed rail corridors announced

The biggest and most significant announcement of this budget is the construction of seven new high-speed rail corridors. The government has decided to connect the country's major industrial and economic centers with a high-speed rail network. The construction of these corridors will significantly reduce travel time and boost business activities. The seven announced corridors are: Mumbai to Pune, Pune to Hyderabad, Hyderabad to Bengaluru, Hyderabad to Chennai, Chennai to Bengaluru, Delhi to Varanasi, and Varanasi to Siliguri. These new routes will not only connect the states of South India but will also reduce the distance between important cities like Delhi and Varanasi in North India.

Emphasis on Rail Safety and Kavach 4.0

Passenger safety has always been a priority for the Railways, and Budget 2026 has given it special attention. The government has allocated significant funds for the expansion of the indigenous automatic train protection system, Kavach 4.0. It was recently rolled out on a 472-kilometer route, and the ministry now aims to expand it to 18,000 kilometers of track. Total expenditure on rail safety is estimated to exceed ₹1.3 lakh crore. Railways' capital expenditure has also been increased by 10 percent, which will facilitate the deployment of safety equipment and modern technology on the tracks.

Vande Bharat Sleeper and long distance travel

The Vande Bharat trains, considered the pride of Indian Railways, will now see a new look. The budget approved the mass production of 24-coach Vande Bharat Sleeper trains. These trains have been specially designed as an alternative to services like the Rajdhani Express. They will feature advanced safety features and a pantry car, providing a world-class experience for long-distance travelers. The arrival of these trains will provide a fast and comfortable option for passengers on overnight routes.

Extension of non-AC coaches for general passengers

Along with premium trains, the government has also addressed the needs of the common man. The budget formalized a plan to increase the number of non-AC coaches. Currently, non-AC coaches constitute approximately 70 percent of trains. The government aims to add 17,000 new non-AC general and sleeper coaches over the next five years. This move will provide significant relief to millions of passengers who expect affordable travel at low fares. This initiative is considered a major step towards making the railways more inclusive.

Discussion on senior citizens and other concessions

Prior to the Railway Budget, there was considerable demand for the reinstatement of ticket concessions for senior citizens. While the budget focused primarily on safety and infrastructure, passengers are hopeful that a positive decision on these concessions will be made in the future. Additionally, several smaller investments have been announced to develop the railways as an integrated transportation system.

Integration of Railway Budget and General Budget

Historically, since 1924, the Railway Budget has been presented separately from the main budget. However, in 2017, the Modi government made a major change by making the Railway Budget a part of the General Budget. Since then, the Finance Minister has made all major railway-related announcements during the General Budget. This integration aims to bring transparency to financial allocation and integrate the railways with the country's overall economic policy. Budget 2026 has made it clear that the government's focus is now on making the railways modern, safe, and fast.
