The “Greed” for Free Movies Can Cost You Dearly: Government Warns Against Data-Stealing Apps

The word “free” often attracts users instantly—but this temptation can sometimes turn into a serious problem, especially for those who watch movies and web series through illegal apps. In the search for free entertainment, many people unknowingly put their personal data, financial information, and even legal safety at risk.

Recently, CyberDost, an initiative under the Ministry of Home Affairs, issued a strong warning regarding the use of the Pikashow app. According to CyberDost, this app is being widely used to stream pirated movies and shows, but it can pose serious cyber and legal risks.

Why is Pikashow considered dangerous?

CyberDost has clarified that Pikashow is not a safe application. It provides pirated content and is not available on trusted platforms like the Google Play Store or Apple App Store. Because of this, users are forced to download it through third-party APK files.

Such third-party apps can secretly install malware or spyware on your device. This can lead to:

  • Theft of personal data

  • Leakage of banking and financial information

  • Unauthorized access to contacts, photos, and messages

  • Increased risk of cyber fraud

Legal trouble is also possible

Apart from data theft, watching or downloading pirated content is a punishable offence under Indian law. CyberDost has warned that using apps like Pikashow can land users in legal trouble in addition to cyber risks.

In its advisory, CyberDost stated that people should not risk their data and security in the greed of free movies. Installing unknown apps and consuming pirated content can have long-term consequences.

Important safety advice for users

  • Never download apps from third-party websites or APK links

  • Install apps only from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store

  • Avoid watching or sharing pirated movies and web series

  • Be cautious of “free” apps that ask for unnecessary permissions
