Imagine a scenario where a scammer manages to acquire a duplicate copy of an identity document and uses it to purchase multiple illegal mobile SIM cards. If those numbers are used to execute financial scams or cybercrimes, law enforcement tracking paths will lead straight back to the unsuspecting document owner.

To give citizens direct visibility over their identity footprint, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) operates Sanchar Saathi (sancharsaathi.gov.in). This essential utility portal lets you instantly see every mobile number registered under your name nationwide and block any connection you didn't personally authorize.

1. The Core Protection Services

The platform features two distinct, consumer-facing modules designed to secure your identity footprint and your mobile hardware.

TAFCOP (Telecom Analytics for Fraud Management and Consumer Protection): This module aggregates customer data across all network service providers (like Jio, Airtel, and Vi). By analyzing these connections, it gives you a complete, bird's-eye view of your registered mobile numbers.
CEIR (Central Equipment Identity Register): If your physical smartphone is lost or stolen anywhere in India, the CEIR module allows you to remotely block the device’s unique IMEI number. Once blocked, the handset becomes completely useless on any cellular network nationwide, rendering it worthless to thieves.

2. Knowing the Legal Limits

To prevent the bulk misuse of documents by unauthorized agents, the government enforces strict ownership caps per individual.

Maximum Limits: A single citizen can legally hold up to 9 mobile connections in their name across India (restricted to 6 connections for the regions of Jammu & Kashmir, Assam, and Northeast states). Exceeding this limit flags your profile for mandatory re-verification.

3. Step-by-Step: Audit and Clean Your Connections

Checking for ghost connections and reporting unauthorized numbers takes under four minutes.

Navigate to the official portal at sancharsaathi.gov.in and select the "Know Your Mobile Connections" option. Enter your primary mobile number and complete the secure captcha.

Input the One-Time Password (OTP) sent to your phone. This securely opens a private dashboard showing the masked versions of all active mobile numbers registered against your official identity footprint.

3.Identify and Categorize:1 min.

Review the listed numbers carefully. If you spot a number you do not recognize or an old number you no longer use, select the checkbox next to it.

4.File a Disownment Report:Immediate.

Mark the unauthorized number as "Not My Number" (or select "Not Required" for old, discarded connections) and click Submit. The portal generates a ticket ID, and the telecom provider will systematically deactivate the connection after background validation.

What to Do If Your Phone is Physically Stolen?

If you lose your actual device, file a quick local police complaint (or e-FIR) first. Then, log onto the CEIR section of the Sanchar Saathi portal, upload your complaint copy, and submit your phone's IMEI number. This instantly locks the device downstream. When the police eventually recover your phone, you can return to the exact same portal to safely unblock it for personal use.
