Premium Car Tyres to Be Made in India! BKT and Italy’s Pirelli Sign Major Deal, Target 8 Lakh Tyres by 2030

India’s automobile industry is attracting growing interest from global companies, and the latest partnership between Indian tyre manufacturer Balkrishna Industries Limited (BKT) and Italian tyre giant Pirelli is another significant development. The two companies have joined hands to expand the premium passenger car tyre business in India, with plans to manufacture up to 8 lakh Pirelli-branded tyres by 2030.

The partnership comes at a time when India’s car market is expanding rapidly, creating fresh opportunities for manufacturers of premium automotive components. Both companies aim to combine their respective strengths in manufacturing, technology and product development to tap into this growing demand.

8 Lakh Pirelli-Branded Tyres to Be Manufactured by 2030

Under the first phase of the agreement, BKT will manufacture Pirelli-branded tyres at a new production facility equipped with advanced technology. The agreement allows BKT to produce a maximum of 800,000 tyres carrying the Pirelli brand by 2030.

The tyres will be manufactured in accordance with Pirelli’s technical specifications and quality standards. The initiative is expected to strengthen local manufacturing capabilities while helping Pirelli expand its reach in India’s premium car tyre segment.

The move also reflects the growing importance of domestic production as international brands look to serve Indian consumers more effectively.

Both Companies May Establish a 50:50 Joint Venture

The partnership could expand further in its second phase. Subject to the fulfilment of certain conditions, BKT and Pirelli may establish a 50:50 joint venture to develop a dedicated manufacturing facility for premium passenger car tyres.

The proposed facility would manufacture tyres under both the Pirelli and BKT brands. Production would cater not only to the Indian market but also to international markets, potentially creating new opportunities for exports.

However, the joint venture remains a future possibility and will depend on the conditions agreed upon by the two companies.

Why Is India Becoming an Attractive Market for Premium Tyres?

India is emerging as an important market for global automobile manufacturers and component suppliers. Rising demand for passenger vehicles, changing consumer preferences and the expansion of the premium car segment are creating opportunities for specialised tyre manufacturers.

The companies estimate that car registrations in India could grow by around 5% to 7% annually between 2025 and 2030. During the same period, the premium car tyre market is projected to expand significantly, potentially reaching around five times its current size.

This expected growth makes India an attractive destination for investment in advanced tyre manufacturing and premium automotive products.

How Will the Partnership Benefit BKT and Pirelli?

For Pirelli, the agreement offers an opportunity to strengthen its presence in India. The Italian company has primarily operated in the country through sales and trading activities. Local manufacturing could help it serve the market more efficiently and benefit from rising demand for premium tyres.

For BKT, the partnership represents an opportunity to diversify beyond its established off-highway tyre business. The company is widely known for manufacturing tyres used in agricultural machinery, construction equipment and industrial vehicles.

Entering the passenger car tyre segment could help BKT develop new capabilities, reach a broader customer base and explore opportunities in international markets.

What Have the Company Leaders Said?

Pirelli Executive Chairman Marco Tronchetti Provera highlighted India's growing significance in the global automobile industry and indicated that the partnership would support the company's efforts to strengthen its position in the country through advanced technology and premium products.

BKT Chairman and Managing Director Arvind Poddar described the agreement as an opportunity to combine the strengths of both organisations. Pirelli CEO Andrea Casalucci expressed confidence in the growth potential of India's premium tyre market, while BKT Joint Managing Director Rajiv Poddar viewed the partnership as recognition of the company's manufacturing capabilities and quality standards.

What Does This Deal Mean for India's Automobile Industry?

The BKT–Pirelli agreement marks an important development in India's premium tyre manufacturing landscape. By combining an established Indian manufacturer's production capabilities with an Italian brand's premium tyre expertise, the partnership could support the expansion of locally manufactured premium products.

If the proposed joint venture moves forward, the collaboration could also create additional manufacturing capacity and strengthen India's role in the international automotive supply chain.

With demand for premium vehicles and advanced automotive components expected to grow, the partnership could open a new chapter for BKT while giving Pirelli a stronger foothold in one of the world's most promising automobile markets.
