Why did fuel prices increase again?
During the ongoing war between the US, Israel, and Iran, Iran seized control of the Strait of Hormuz, disrupting global oil supplies. The sanctions imposed by Iran in the Strait of Hormuz have led to a sharp rise in crude oil prices.
Despite the rise in crude oil prices over the past several weeks, India's oil marketing companies had been selling petrol and diesel at the old prices. However, for the past two weeks, oil prices have been rising.
According to estimates, the three oil and gas companies—Indian Oil Corporation (IOCL), Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL), and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL)—were collectively losing more than ₹1,000 crore per day. Therefore, the government had to raise prices.
