India may receive a significant boost to its energy supplies amid ongoing tensions in the Strait of Hormuz, as a tanker carrying Iranian crude oil is set to arrive on its western coast—marking the first such shipment in nearly seven years.
According to ship-tracking data, the vessel Ping Shun is expected to reach the port of Vadinar later this week. The Aframax tanker is carrying around 500,000 barrels of crude oil, loaded from Iran’s Kharg Island in early March. However, sources indicate that the vessel’s final destination could still change.
First Import Since 2019
If the delivery is completed, it would mark India’s first crude oil import from Iran since May 2019, when purchases were halted due to US sanctions. The development comes at a critical time, as global oil markets face disruption following escalating tensions involving Iran, Israel, and the United States, which have impacted supply routes in the Middle East.
Temporary US Relief Measures
Last month, the United States introduced a temporary waiver allowing previously loaded Iranian crude to enter the market, aiming to ease supply pressures. However, Indian state-run refiners have largely remained cautious due to complexities surrounding payments, shipping, and insurance.
Challenges Persist Despite Easing
Despite the limited relaxation, logistical and financial hurdles continue to complicate transactions. A recent example includes a shipment of Iranian liquefied petroleum gas that arrived in Mangalore but remains undelivered due to unresolved payment issues.
Banking restrictions also pose a major obstacle, as several financial institutions are unwilling to process transactions involving Iranian entities, even under temporary exemptions.
Uncertain Route and Strategic Implications
Interestingly, the Ping Shun had earlier indicated China as its destination before altering course toward India. This would be its first known delivery to the country.
