The government has announced a new initiative aimed at expanding piped natural gas (PNG) connections in households across India. The Incentive Scheme for Promotion of Domestic PNG Connections will come into effect from September 1, 2026, with the objective of making clean and convenient piped cooking gas available to more families.

What is the new PNG scheme?

Under the scheme, city gas distribution companies will receive incentives for increasing active domestic PNG connections.

The government wants companies to focus not only on installing new connections but also on converting existing inactive or unbilled connections into working connections.

India currently has around 1.74 crore domestic PNG connections, according to the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas.

Why has the government introduced this scheme?

Many households already have PNG infrastructure available but may not be actively using the connection. The new incentive is designed to encourage gas distribution companies to activate these connections and expand the network into additional areas.

This could make it easier for more families to switch from traditional cooking fuels to piped gas.

What are the benefits for households?

PNG offers several practical advantages over conventional LPG-cylinder-based cooking arrangements.

With PNG, households receive gas through a pipeline rather than having to store and replace cylinders. This can make cooking-gas access more convenient and reduce the need to arrange cylinder deliveries.

The government also describes PNG as a cleaner and safer cooking-fuel option compared with several traditional fuels.

Will every household automatically get a PNG connection?

No. The scheme does not mean that every household will automatically receive a free PNG connection.

The government is providing incentives to gas distribution companies to increase active connections. Availability will therefore depend on whether PNG infrastructure has been developed in a particular locality and whether the household meets the applicable connection requirements.

Existing inactive connections may also benefit

One important focus of the scheme is the activation of connections that have already been installed but are not currently generating billed consumption.

This means households that already have a PNG connection but are not actively using it may see greater efforts from distributors to make those connections operational.

A step towards cleaner household energy

The government is increasingly focusing on expanding access to cleaner energy while improving energy security.

The new PNG incentive scheme is therefore aimed at both infrastructure expansion and greater utilisation of existing connections. If successful, it could make piped cooking gas available to a larger number of urban and semi-urban households.

For consumers, the key thing to remember is that the scheme mainly incentivises gas distribution companies; it should not be confused with a direct cash subsidy being deposited into every household's bank account.
