Australia Domestic One-Day Cup 2025–26: New South Wales Crowned Champions as Sean Abbott Shines

The New South Wales cricket team clinched the title of the Australia Domestic One-Day Cup 2025–26 after defeating the Tasmania cricket team by four wickets in a rain-affected final.

Due to rain interruptions, the match was shortened to 22 overs per side. Batting first, Tasmania struggled on a difficult pitch and were bowled out for 118 runs.

Tasmania’s Struggle with the Bat

For Tasmania, Nikhil Chaudhary was the top scorer with 31 runs, while Tim Ward contributed 24 runs. However, the rest of the batting lineup failed to build momentum against disciplined bowling from New South Wales.

Kurtis Patterson Leads the Chase

Chasing 119 runs, New South Wales reached the target in 20.1 overs, though they lost six wickets along the way.

Captain Kurtis Patterson played a match-winning knock of 52 runs not out, anchoring the chase. Lower-order batter Joel Davies also made a crucial contribution, scoring 20 runs off just 10 balls to help secure the victory.

Sean Abbott’s Impact Despite IPL Snub

One of the standout performers of the tournament was Sean Abbott, who surprisingly went unsold in the Indian Premier League auction despite having an impressive record in white-ball cricket.

Abbott played four matches in the competition and took eight wickets, playing an important role in his team’s success.

Meanwhile, young spinner Tanveer Sangha was the most successful bowler of the tournament with 19 wickets, while Kurtis Patterson finished as the team’s leading run-scorer with 565 runs at an average of 113.

Historic Achievement for New South Wales

The victory adds another chapter to the rich history of the New South Wales cricket team, which remains one of the most successful sides in Australian domestic cricket.

  • This is their 21st One-Day Cup title since the tournament began in 1969.

  • Their first title came in the 1969–70 season.

  • The latest triumph is particularly special as it marks their first championship since the 2019–20 season.
