Apple has had to settle a lawsuit filed in the US over its voice assistant service Siri. The company was accused of recording users' private conversations without permission. Apple has now agreed to settle about Rs 790 crore ($95 million) in this case. Eligible users can get compensation up to Rs 8,500 ($100).
What is the whole matter?
This case was filed in 2019. It was alleged that Siri would often activate automatically without command and record users' private conversations. Some of these recordings also included health-related information and private discussions, which were allegedly sent to external contractors.
Apple has denied these allegations, but has decided to settle without fighting the case. The company claims that Siri has always taken care of users' privacy and has never used the recordings for selling or marketing.
How much compensation will be received?
Maximum of $100 (approximately ₹8,500) per user
Payment of up to $20 per eligible device
You can claim for a maximum of 5 devices.
Who can claim?
Those who have used Siri on Apple devices between September 17, 2014, and December 31, 2024. Those who have experienced unwanted Siri activation and recording of private conversations. If you have an iPhone, iPad, MacBook, Apple Watch, HomePod, iPod Touch, and Apple TV, then you can claim compensation.
