A same-sex marriage case from Chhatarpur district has once again come into the spotlight after one of the women accused her family and the police of harassment, reigniting debate around personal freedom, consent, and administrative responsibility.
Complaint reaches SP office
On Thursday, one of the women approached the Superintendent of Police Office, alleging physical and mental harassment by her family and the local police. In her written application, she stated that she wished to live with her partner of her own free will, but both society and family members were opposing their relationship.
She claimed that she was assaulted and mentally tortured—first at the police station and later at home—after being forcibly sent back with her family. She sought protection of her life and property, along with permission to meet and live with her partner.
Five-year relationship, temple wedding
According to reports, the two women—identified as Kajal (23) and Rani (21), with names changed—had been in a relationship for nearly five years. They reportedly met while working at a restaurant, and over time their bond strengthened.
Recently, the couple performed a marriage ceremony at a temple, where Kajal symbolically took the role of the groom by applying vermillion on Rani’s forehead and tying a mangalsutra, pledging to remain together for life.
Family opposition and police intervention
The situation escalated when both families learned about the relationship and strongly objected to the marriage. After the women left their homes, missing persons complaints were filed by the families at local police stations.
Police later traced the couple and brought them to the Civil Lines police station, where a tense situation reportedly prevailed for several hours on Wednesday. After counselling, the police sent both women back with their respective families.
Allegations against police action
The complainant alleged that despite clearly expressing her wishes, the police did not hear her out and forcibly handed her over to her family. She further claimed that she was threatened and assaulted at home afterward, and warned that her life could be in danger if she is not allowed to live independently with her partner.
Police response
The police department has stated that the complaint is under examination and that all allegations will be thoroughly investigated before any action is taken. The matter is being treated as sensitive, with growing public scrutiny over the administration’s role.
Confirming receipt of the application, Arun Kumar Soni, City Superintendent of Police (CSP), said that the memorandum has been received and further action will be taken strictly in accordance with the law.
