Mid-Size SUV Battle Heats Up: Feature-Loaded Rivals Ready to Challenge the Hyundai Creta

The Indian mid-size SUV segment is witnessing intense competition as several major carmakers prepare to launch new and upgraded models to take on the hugely popular Hyundai Creta. Brands such as Renault, Nissan, Skoda, and Volkswagen are gearing up to strengthen their presence in this fast-growing segment with a mix of ICE and electric SUVs. If you’re considering alternatives to the Creta, several powerful and feature-rich options are on the way.

The much-awaited Renault Duster is set to return in a new-generation avatar, with its India launch scheduled for March 17 and deliveries expected from April 2026. The upcoming Duster will sport a more muscular and modern design compared to its predecessor, along with upgraded interior technology and refined styling. Under the hood, it will offer 1.0-litre and 1.3-litre turbo-petrol engines producing around 100 PS and 163 PS respectively. However, unlike some global versions, the India-spec model is expected to miss out on an all-wheel-drive option.

Another strong contender is the Skoda Kushaq facelift, which is slated for launch in March 2026. The updated Kushaq will feature refreshed exterior styling, a more premium cabin, and an important mechanical upgrade in the form of a new 8-speed torque converter automatic gearbox. This transmission will be paired with the 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine producing 115 bhp, while the more powerful 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine with 150 bhp will continue to be offered for performance-focused buyers.

Nissan is also preparing its own Creta rival in the form of the Nissan Tecton, which is essentially a sibling to the new Duster but with distinct styling. Built on the same platform, the Tecton will share interiors, features, and engine options with the Duster, but will stand out visually. Teasers suggest LED headlights with connected DRLs, connected LED tail-lamps, and bold Tecton branding on the hood and tailgate. Although the official launch date is yet to be confirmed, the SUV is expected to hit showrooms by June 2026.

Completing the lineup is the Volkswagen Taigun facelift, expected to arrive in 2026. The updated Taigun will receive subtle exterior tweaks inspired by the Volkswagen ID.4, along with several new features. Expected upgrades include a new digital driver display, refreshed infotainment system, panoramic sunroof, and even rear seats with a massage function. Engine options are likely to remain unchanged, ensuring the same balance of performance and efficiency.

With these upcoming launches, the mid-size SUV segment is set for a major shake-up. Buyers looking beyond the Hyundai Creta will soon have multiple compelling options that combine bold design, modern features, and strong performance.
