Maruti Suzuki is preparing to give one of its popular premium hatchbacks a fresh makeover. The Maruti Baleno Facelift is expected to launch on September 5, bringing noticeable styling updates and potentially a few new features to keep the model competitive.
The second-generation Baleno currently on sale arrived in 2022. While Maruti Suzuki has not yet disclosed complete specifications of the facelift, test vehicles spotted ahead of the launch provide some clues about what buyers can expect.
Baleno Facelift Could Get a Redesigned Front
The most noticeable updates are expected at the front. Test vehicles indicate that Maruti may introduce a redesigned grille with a horizontal element running across the centre and visually connecting the headlamps. Chrome detailing could also be incorporated to give the hatchback a more premium appearance.
The basic shape of the headlamps, however, is expected to remain largely unchanged. The familiar boomerang-style LED daytime running lights could also continue.
Another important change could be a redesigned front bumper. Test cars appear to have a different bumper treatment, while the conventional fog lamps seen on the existing model appear to be missing.
New Alloy Wheels Expected
Changes to the side profile are likely to be relatively limited. The overall silhouette of the Baleno is expected to remain familiar, although Maruti could introduce a fresh alloy-wheel design to distinguish the facelift from the outgoing version.
At the rear, a redesigned bumper could provide a fresher look. The existing tail-lamp design, roof-mounted spoiler and rear wiper are expected to continue without significant modifications.
Sunroof Could Be Among the Big Feature Additions
Inside the cabin, Maruti Suzuki may retain the existing dashboard layout rather than giving the Baleno a complete redesign.
The facelift is expected to continue with a 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system, trapezoidal AC vents with silver detailing and a three-spoke steering wheel.
The bigger story could be the addition of new equipment. Reports based on the test vehicles suggest that the updated Baleno could receive new seat upholstery, ambient lighting and potentially a single-pane sunroof.
If a sunroof is introduced, it could make the Baleno more competitive against newer models offering increasingly feature-rich cabins.
Existing equipment such as automatic climate control, a six-speaker audio system, electrically adjustable ORVMs and an auto-dimming IRVM is also expected to be carried forward.
Engine Options Likely to Remain Unchanged
Major mechanical changes are not expected with the facelift. The Baleno is likely to continue with its existing petrol and CNG powertrain options.
The 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine currently produces around 90 hp and is available with a five-speed manual transmission as well as a five-speed AMT.
The CNG version produces around 77.5 hp and is expected to remain available with a five-speed manual gearbox.
Therefore, the facelift appears to be focused primarily on design and equipment upgrades rather than changes to performance.
Can the Updated Baleno Strengthen Its Position?
SUVs have gained significant popularity among Indian buyers, but premium hatchbacks continue to attract customers looking for compact dimensions, practicality and relatively affordable running costs.
The Baleno remains an important model in Maruti Suzuki's passenger vehicle portfolio. With a refreshed exterior and the possibility of additional features such as ambient lighting and a sunroof, the September 5 update could make the hatchback more appealing to buyers.
