According to the latest government data, DigiLocker had crossed 72 crore registered users as of July 31, 2026, while more than 934 crore documents had been issued through the platform.

With driving licences, vehicle documents, educational certificates and several other records increasingly available digitally, keeping a DigiLocker account secure has also become important.

What Is DigiLocker?

DigiLocker is a government-backed digital document platform that allows users to access documents issued electronically by participating government departments, educational institutions and other authorised organisations.

Instead of repeatedly uploading scanned copies, users can retrieve supported documents directly from the issuing authority.

This can make document verification easier for various services where digitally issued records are accepted.

More Than 72 Crore Users Registered

DigiLocker's user base has expanded rapidly.

Government figures show that the platform had more than 72 crore registered users by July 31, 2026. More than 934 crore documents had also been issued through the ecosystem.

This massive scale means DigiLocker is increasingly becoming part of everyday digital documentation in India.

What Documents Can You Access?

The documents available depend on which issuing authorities have integrated their records with DigiLocker.

Users may be able to access documents such as:

• Driving licence

• Vehicle registration certificate

• Educational marksheets and certificates

• Government-issued certificates

• Other records supported by participating departments

Availability can differ depending on the issuing organisation and the user's records.

Check Your Personal Details Carefully

If you're unable to retrieve a document, first check whether the personal information in your account matches the records maintained by the issuing authority.

Differences in your name, date of birth or other details can sometimes prevent a document from being retrieved correctly.

Don't repeatedly create new accounts to solve a mismatch. Instead, check which record contains incorrect information and follow the appropriate correction process.

Beware of Fake DigiLocker KYC Messages

As DigiLocker becomes more popular, scammers may use its name to target users.

Be suspicious of unexpected SMS, WhatsApp messages or emails claiming:

"Your DigiLocker will be blocked today."

"Complete KYC immediately to keep your documents active."

"Click here to verify your Aadhaar and DigiLocker."

Don't click an unfamiliar link simply because the message looks urgent.

Instead, open DigiLocker through its official app or website and check your account directly.

Never Share Your OTP

An OTP can be used to verify access to an account, so it should never be shared with an unknown caller.

Be particularly careful if someone claims to be a government employee or customer-care representative and asks for your Aadhaar OTP, banking OTP, UPI PIN or password.

Don't install screen-sharing or remote-access applications on the instructions of an unknown caller either.

UMANG Also Expands to 2,585 Services

DigiLocker isn't the only government digital platform expanding rapidly.

According to government data, UMANG offered 2,585 government services as of July 23, 2026, up from 166 services when the platform began in 2017.

Transactions through UMANG had also crossed 798 crore.

The platform provides a single gateway to numerous central, state and local government services.

Digital Documents Are Becoming More Useful

DigiLocker can reduce dependence on physical documents, particularly when authenticated digital records are accepted by the organisation requesting them.

However, users should remember that simply storing a photograph or scanned PDF in a digital account isn't necessarily the same as having a document electronically issued by its authorised source.

When possible, retrieve documents directly from the issuing authority through DigiLocker.

With government services moving online, your smartphone increasingly acts as a gateway to important personal records.

Protect your DigiLocker account just as carefully as your banking or email account. Use a secure phone lock, don't share OTPs and avoid links received from unknown sources.
