Iran-US Talks: Amid the ongoing ceasefire between the US and Iran, a deal has been reached between the US and Indonesia regarding the Malacca Strait, after which strategic activity has intensified.
Amid rising tensions over the Strait of Hormuz in the Middle East, a new issue has emerged that has drawn global attention. While the US is increasing pressure on the sea routes connecting Iran, it is also eyeing another important sea route, the Strait of Malacca. A new defense agreement was recently signed between the US and Indonesia. Under this agreement, US military aircraft will now be able to use Indonesian airspace more effectively. Officially, this agreement is described as an increase in defense cooperation, but it could further strengthen US access to the Strait of Malacca.
The Strait of Malacca is a vital sea route connecting the Indian Ocean to East Asia. A significant portion of global trade passes through this route, transporting not only oil but also electronic goods, machinery, and many other essential commodities.
Comparison of the Strait of Hormuz-Strait of Malacca
In comparison, the Strait of Hormuz is more important for oil, while the Strait of Malacca serves as a major lifeline for all trade. This route is particularly crucial for countries like China, as a large portion of its energy needs come through it. For this reason, China views it as a weakness, a phenomenon known as the Malacca Dilemma. Although the United States is not directly dependent on this route, it views it strategically. This route is very narrow in many places, so controlling it could be crucial in the event of tension or war.
India's role is important on the Malacca Strait
India's role in this matter is also crucial. The Andaman and Nicobar Islands are located near the Strait of Malacca, giving India easy access to surveillance over the region. Military bases here, especially the Campbell Bay Air Station, help monitor maritime activities. India is gradually increasing its strength in the region, strengthening its presence through new infrastructure and military facilities. This could lead to increased cooperation between the US and India in this region to counter China's influence in the future.
It is not easy to increase dominance in the Malacca Strait
It will not be easy for the US to increase its dominance in the Strait of Malacca. This route is jointly managed by Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore, and their borders and rights are crucial for these countries. Singapore holds special importance in this region, as its ports and maritime services are globally recognized. Its economy also relies heavily on maritime trade, making it crucial for it to maintain stability here. Recently, debates have escalated regarding tariffs and restrictions on sea routes, raising concerns among Southeast Asian countries. In this context, this new US strategy demonstrates its desire to strengthen its hold on not just one, but several key sea routes simultaneously.
