US President Donald Trump once again reasserted his claim to Greenland and released a new US map on Tuesday (January 20, 2026). The map shows the Arctic island, Canada and Venezuela as US territories.

Trump took to twitter to mock the image, sharing a photo on Twitter of NATO allies French President Emmanuel Macron, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, among other leaders, seated in the Oval Office, with a modified map in the 'font-size:12.0pt;line-height:115%; font-family:"Times New Roman","serif"'>European Union won't protest much: Trump

President Trump claimed that the European Union would not oppose his bid for Greenland. Speaking to reporters in Florida, he said the island was a national security necessity to counter the influence of Russia and China and claimed Denmark lacked adequate defense capabilities. Referring to Greenland, he said, "We have to take it. They have to do it."

The US president had previously made this assertion in a letter to Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gaar Store, linking his claims to Denmark's territory to his failure to win the Nobel Peace Prize. He also claimed that the US economy is the fastest growing in the world before his Davos visit.

Meanwhile, in another post on the social media platform Truth Social, Donald Trump said he had a very good telephone conversation with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte regarding Greenland. He said, "As I've said very clearly to everyone, Greenland is essential to national and global security. There's no question of backing down. Everyone agrees on that."

In another Truth Social post, Donald Trump shared a photo showing himself, along with Vice President J.D. Vance and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, raising the American flag in Greenland. The photo also shows a sign that reads, "Greenland, US Territory, EST. 2026."
