Amid global uncertainties and rising concerns over fuel prices, panic buying has been observed at petrol pumps in several areas. While authorities have clarified that there is no shortage of petrol or diesel in India, long queues and hurried refueling have increased the risk of consumers falling victim to small-scale fraud.
In such situations, staying alert while refueling your vehicle is essential. Here are five important precautions that can help you avoid being cheated at petrol pumps.
Stay Alert and Monitor the Process
Always step out of your vehicle and closely observe the fuel dispensing process. Keep your focus on both the meter and the attendant. Avoid distractions such as phone calls, as inattention can make it easier for irregularities to go unnoticed. If the meter seems to run unusually fast or the attendant repeatedly stops the nozzle, remain cautious.
Check the Meter Reading Before Starting
Before fuel is dispensed, ensure that the digital meter is reset to 0.00. This is one of the most common areas where fraud can occur. If the reading is not zero, ask the attendant to reset it immediately before proceeding.
Avoid Round Figures While Paying
Instead of asking for fuel in round amounts like ₹100, ₹500, or ₹1000, opt for irregular figures such as ₹103 or ₹507. This simple trick reduces the chances of manipulation, as preset or memorized tricks are often linked to round numbers.
Inspect the Nozzle and Machine Seal
Make sure the fuel dispenser and nozzle carry proper certification seals. A broken or tampered seal may indicate possible manipulation. In some cases, unauthorized methods like magnets or manual interruption of the nozzle can affect the quantity of fuel dispensed.
Keep Track of Mileage and Fuel Quality
A sudden drop in your vehicle’s mileage could signal poor-quality or adulterated fuel. It is advisable to refuel at trusted petrol pumps, preferably those operated by well-known or government-owned companies, where quality checks are more stringent.
Stay Informed, Not Fearful
While rumors and global developments may create concern, there is currently no confirmed fuel shortage. Instead of panic buying, consumers should focus on staying vigilant and informed to ensure fair transactions and protect their vehicles from potential damage.
