In a significant move aimed at enhancing the accuracy of Aadhaar records for children, the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) is launching a free biometric update drive directly within schools. This initiative will target children between the ages of 5 and 7, benefiting an estimated 7 crore students across the country.

The campaign, scheduled to begin within the next 45 to 60 days, will allow children to update their biometric information—such as fingerprints and iris scans—without having to visit Aadhaar centers. The process will be carried out in collaboration with schools, ensuring it is safe, simple, and carried out only with parental consent.

Why This Update Is Important

As per UIDAI norms, biometric updates become mandatory once a child turns five. Since Aadhaar numbers issued to infants are generated without biometric data, it becomes essential to update them later to maintain the validity and accuracy of the Aadhaar record. Failure to do so could result in the Aadhaar number becoming inactive by the time the child turns seven.

UIDAI CEO Bhavesh Kumar emphasized that this biometric update is not just a regulatory requirement, but also a step towards ensuring children are able to access various government welfare schemes. With accurate and active Aadhaar information, students can seamlessly benefit from services like school admissions, scholarship applications, entrance exam registrations, and Direct Benefit Transfers (DBT).

How the Process Will Work

To facilitate this massive update drive, UIDAI will install biometric kits in every district. The schools will serve as Aadhaar update centers for this age group. Before collecting biometric data, schools will seek explicit consent from parents or guardians. This ensures transparency and safety throughout the process.

For children aged 5 to 7, the biometric update will be completely free of cost. However, for those older than 7, a nominal fee of ₹100 will be applicable for updates made outside this school-based initiative.

Upcoming Plans

UIDAI is also planning to introduce a second mandatory biometric update at the age of 15. Like the current initiative, this too is expected to be rolled out through schools, making it easier for students and parents to comply without additional travel or cost.

The authority is focusing on making Aadhaar a more effective and updated identity tool, especially for children who are at the receiving end of multiple public welfare schemes. By ensuring that biometric data is kept up-to-date, UIDAI aims to eliminate hurdles in accessing crucial benefits.
