Dhanteras is the first day of Diwali. It is a festival of wealth, joy, and prosperity. This year, Dhanteras falls on November 6, 2026. On this day, we worship Goddess Lakshmi, Lord Kubera, and Lord Dhanvantari. Buying gold, silver, and new utensils on this day is considered very auspicious. That's why markets are so crowded. Many people want to gift each other something on this day. But our elders have advised us to keep certain things in mind when giving gifts. What are these things to keep in mind?
1. Never give empty utensils or an empty purse.
On Dhanteras, everyone buys brass, copper, and steel utensils. But remember one thing: never give empty utensils as gifts. Place some rice, a laddu, or something else in it. Also, if you are gifting a purse, never give it empty. Always keep at least 11 rupees or 5 rupees in it. Giving empty items is considered inauspicious. It is said that a full heart brings prosperity to the home.
2. Don't give or take salt on this day.
Salt is very important in our homes. It is considered a harbinger of prosperity. Therefore, on Dhanteras or Diwali, salt should not be given or taken from anyone. It is believed that this will drive away Lakshmi from the home.
3. Avoid Gifting Black Items
In some homes, gifting black items on Diwali is considered inauspicious. Some people dislike the color black and don't want it on the festival. However, this doesn't mean that giving black items is prohibited everywhere. This is a personal matter. Therefore, when choosing a gift, consider the other person's preferences and the customs in your home.
4. Avoid giving sharp objects like knives and scissors.
Many people avoid giving sharp objects like knives, scissors, and other sharp objects as gifts during the festival. It is said that giving sharp objects creates distance in relationships and leads to quarrels. This is an old belief. If you have such a rule in your home, be sure to follow it.
5. Glass items should also be avoided.
In astrology, glass is associated with the planet Rahu. Rahu is a planet that brings difficulties and confusion. Therefore, many people avoid buying or gifting glass jars, mirrors, or glass showpieces on Dhanteras. 6. Avoid exchanging oil and ghee. Oil and ghee are used for worship. Lighting a lamp is essential. Therefore, scriptures say that instead of giving or receiving oil or ghee on this day, it is better to bring some in advance to your home for worship.
So what should you gift?
Basically, the purpose of giving gifts on Dhanteras is one: to share happiness and strengthen relationships. You can give anything simple. Sweets, fruits, puja items, or any other nice household item needed. The most important thing is to express love and respect in your heart when giving. Every village and every home has different traditions; respect them and then choose your gift accordingly.
