Meena Kumari, famous as the Tragedy Queen, was actually named Mehjabeen, after coming into films she became Meena Kumari and ruled Hindi cinema till her death.
Due to financial constraints, the Tragedy Queen's father Master had sent his three daughters out of the house to earn money in their childhood. All three daughters started working as child artists. When the superstar of that era Ashok Kumar saw Meena Kumari for the first time, he was impressed by her beauty. As soon as he saw Meena, he said that this girl will become a great heroine one day. His words came true. That is what happened. Ashok Kumar and Meena Kumari won the hearts of people by working as lead hero and heroine in many films.
Meena Kumari fell in love many times in her life. But she was so enamoured with producer, director and writer Kamal Amrohi that she lost her senses. The actress even angered her Hitler-like father by ignoring him. But later Meena Kumari's marriage with Kamal did not last long. According to many media reports, Meena was also very close to Gulzar for some time. But she found peace by going to the new actor Dharmendra.
Dharmendra and Meena Kumari were seen as lead actors in the film 'Poornima' released in 1965. Dharmendra's simplicity and pleasant behavior impressed Meena Kumari a lot. In those days, Meena was going through a very bad phase in her personal life. After the film 'Sahib, Biwi Aur Ghulam', she had become addicted to drinking alcohol. She did not have a partner who could understand her pain. Meena Kumari and Dharmendra used to talk for hours in the makeup room after the shooting. Whenever Dharmendra came back after meeting her, her eyes would be filled with tears. Meena used to share all her pain with Dharmendra.
