After the body was found, the police registered a case of unnatural death under Section 194(3)(iv) of the Indian Penal Code (BNSS) and began an investigation. During the investigation, using scientific methods and technical evidence, the police zeroed in on the accused, who lived in the house next door to the victim's.

A week after the body of a software engineer was found in her rented home in Bengaluru, police have revealed that an 18-year-old man committed the murder. The man killed the woman after she resisted his attempt to sexually assault her. Sharmila DK, 34, was found dead in her apartment in Subramanya Layout, Ramamurthy Nagar, on January 3. It was initially suspected that the technician, who worked at Accenture, had died of suffocation after a fire broke out.

After the body was found, police registered a case of unnatural death under Section 194(3)(iv) of the Indian Penal Code (BNSS) and began an investigation. During the investigation, using scientific methods and technical evidence, police zeroed in on the accused, who lived in the house next door to the victim's, identified as Karnal Kurai.

Upon questioning, Kurai reportedly confessed to the crime. He told police that he had entered the woman's home through a sliding window at around 9 p.m. on January 3rd to have sex with her.

When the victim resisted, he allegedly forcibly pressed her mouth and nose until she lost consciousness. In the ensuing scuffle, the victim sustained injuries and began bleeding.

In an attempt to destroy evidence, the accused placed the victim's clothes and other incriminating material on a mattress in the bedroom, set them on fire, and then fled the scene, police said. He also allegedly stole the victim's mobile phone while fleeing.

Based on the confession and concrete evidence, a case has been registered against the accused under sections 103(1) (murder), 64(2), 66, and 238 (destruction of evidence) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Further investigation is underway.
