A disturbing case from Agra has reignited concerns about explicit content on social media and its impact on minors. A local woman has lodged an FIR at the cyber police station after her children were exposed to pornographic material while scrolling Instagram Reels.
What triggered the complaint
The complainant, Ruby Tomar, a resident of the Tajganj area and an Ayurvedic medicine supplier by profession, alleged that a specific Instagram user ID is circulating obscene videos that are easily reaching children through the app’s recommendation algorithm. Some of these videos reportedly have millions of views.
Ruby said the issue first surfaced on January 4, when she noticed an objectionable reel playing on a phone at a beauty parlour in Kamla Nagar. The following day, January 5, the same content appeared on her children’s phones at home while they were watching normal videos. Shocked, she immediately took the phone away.
What she found on the account
After checking the page, Ruby alleged that nearly every video on the account contained vulgar gestures and sexually explicit audio. She also flagged inappropriate comments under the videos, saying the content was unfit for public viewing—especially for minors.
Why the case escalated
Choosing not to ignore the incident, Ruby filed a formal complaint with the cyber police, stating that such content:
-
Violates social norms
-
Is harmful to the mental well-being of children
-
Spreads obscenity at scale via social media algorithms
Police sources said the influencer operates two Instagram accounts with a combined following running into hundreds of thousands, and also has a sizeable audience on Facebook—indicating wide reach.
Police action so far
Cyber police officials said strict laws apply to the spread of obscenity online. The case has been registered, and investigators are tracing the user IDs with the help of the cyber cell. The account holder—reportedly based in Agra—may be called for questioning once identification is confirmed.
The larger concern
The incident highlights how recommendation systems on platforms like Instagram can inadvertently surface explicit content to minors, raising questions about content moderation, age controls, and parental safeguards.
Safety tip for parents: Enable parental controls, restrict sensitive content, review privacy settings, and use supervised accounts where available. If explicit content appears, report it in-app and approach cyber police if needed.
