Will Thackeray Brothers Unite for BMC Elections? Uddhav Begins Groundwork as Shiv Sainiks Back Alliance with Raj

In a dramatic shift in Maharashtra politics, Uddhav Thackeray and Raj Thackeray—cousins long estranged—may finally join forces ahead of the upcoming Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections. With political pressure mounting after setbacks in the 2024 Assembly elections, the Thackeray brothers appear to be inching toward reconciliation, with Uddhav actively gauging grassroots opinion within his party.
Uddhav Seeks Feedback from Former Councillors
In a closed-door meeting at Matoshree, Uddhav met former Shiv Sena (UBT) councillors to assess the political mood around a potential alliance with Raj Thackeray's Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS). According to sources, the feedback was largely positive, with many suggesting the alliance would boost electoral chances and re-energize the Marathi voter base in Mumbai.
The key takeaway: A thaw in ties is no longer just speculation—it's now a strategic calculation.
From Family Rift to Possible Reunion
Uddhav and Raj, both political heirs of the late Balasaheb Thackeray, split ways in 2005 over succession issues within Shiv Sena. Raj then launched MNS, positioning himself as a parallel voice for the Marathi Manoos. Since then, the cousins have remained rivals.
But after both parties suffered major defeats in the 2024 Assembly elections, political survival may be pushing them toward a pragmatic alliance. Recent meetings and public gestures, including Raj’s openness in a podcast and positive signals from Uddhav's camp (including coverage in Saamana), have fueled speculation of a formal tie-up.
BMC: The Last Stronghold
The Mumbai municipal elections, likely to be held between October and November, are seen as critical. The BJP, fresh off its Assembly win, is looking to gain control of the cash-rich BMC, traditionally a Shiv Sena bastion. Uddhav knows that losing BMC would be a severe blow, which is why he’s leaving no stone unturned to fortify his position—even if that means patching up with Raj.
In the 2017 BMC polls, Uddhav's Shiv Sena secured 84 seats, while MNS managed just 7. Now, with the BJP eyeing dominance in Mumbai, a unified Thackeray front could be a game-changer in keeping the saffron fortress intact.
Political Strategy in Motion
During his meeting with councillors, Uddhav emphasized:
-
Revamping party outreach through Shiv Sena Bhavan.
-
Opening a dedicated election office.
-
Ensuring former councillors remain connected with the public and party work.
Uddhav is expected to take a final decision on the alliance soon, but only after extensive consultation with party leaders and cadre.
Analysts: Thackeray Chemistry Could Shake Maharashtra Politics
Political observers believe that if Uddhav and Raj bury the hatchet, it could reshape the electoral landscape of Mumbai. The symbolism of a Thackeray reunion, especially under the looming shadow of BJP dominance, could rally core Marathi voters and bring back disenchanted supporters.
