Ranjeet Bajaj is a well-known figure in Indian grassroots football, currently in the spotlight after his controversial remarks comparing fitness levels of young athletes in his academy with Indian cricket star Virat Kohli.
Bajaj is associated with the Minerva Academy, a youth football development setup known for producing players who have gone on to represent India at international level. Over the years, his academy has built a strong reputation in Indian football’s development circuit, winning multiple domestic and international youth tournaments and focusing heavily on early-age talent training.
A former youth-level footballer himself, Bajaj has long been active in promoting structured grassroots sports systems in India. He has also been part of public conversations around sports development and talent nurturing.
He recently stirred debate during a podcast appearance when he claimed that Under-13 and Under-15 players from his academy could outperform even elite athletes like Virat Kohli in fitness benchmarks such as the Yo-Yo test. The statement quickly went viral and triggered widespread criticism and trolling from cricket fans, who questioned the comparison.
The Yo-Yo test, often used to measure endurance and recovery fitness, has become a standard benchmark in elite sports training. While Bajaj’s claim was meant to highlight youth fitness standards in his system, it was widely viewed as an unfair comparison given the differences in age, sport, and professional context.
Despite the backlash, Bajaj continues to be recognized for his contributions to youth football development in India, particularly through Minerva Academy’s structured training programs and international exposure for young players.
