Receiving calls from unknown numbers has become a daily problem for mobile users. Many people hesitate to answer calls because they cannot tell whether the caller is a genuine company representative or a potential fraudster.
Now, the government has introduced an important change that could make service and transactional calls easier to identify.
The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has started the phase-wise implementation of the 1601 numbering series for certain service and transactional calls. The move covers sectors such as utilities, courier and logistics services.
What Is the 1601 Numbering Series?
The 1601 series is being introduced specifically for service and transactional communications from eligible organisations.
The idea is to create a more recognisable numbering pattern so that customers can distinguish legitimate service-related calls from ordinary personal calls and potentially suspicious numbers.
This could be particularly useful for calls related to services where customers may be expecting an update, confirmation or other transaction-related information.
Which Calls Could Use 1601 Numbers?
TRAI's latest direction covers service and transactional calls made by entities in sectors including utilities, courier and logistics.
This means that over time, customers may begin receiving certain legitimate service-related calls from numbers starting with 1601.
The implementation is being carried out in phases rather than changing every service number at once.
Why Is This Important for Common Users?
Fraudsters frequently use phone calls to impersonate banks, delivery companies, government departments and other organisations.
A dedicated numbering series can make it easier for customers to recognise the general nature of an incoming service call.
However, users should still remain careful. Seeing a particular number series should not be treated as absolute proof that a caller is genuine. Customers should never share OTPs, PINs, passwords or sensitive banking information simply because a caller claims to represent a company.
What Should You Do When You Receive a 1601 Call?
If you receive a service-related call from a 1601 number, first consider whether you are expecting a call connected to a recent transaction or service request.
Do not share confidential information unless you have independently verified who is calling.
For banking, payments or government-related matters, it is safer to contact the organisation through its official website, app or customer-care channel if the caller asks for sensitive information.
Government Is Increasing Focus on Safer Digital Communication
The introduction of the 1601 series is part of a wider effort to make India's communication ecosystem more structured and trustworthy.
As more services move online and businesses increasingly communicate with customers through mobile phones, distinguishing legitimate transactional communication from unwanted or fraudulent calls is becoming increasingly important.
For consumers, the new numbering system could provide another useful signal when deciding whether an incoming service call is genuine—but basic precautions against phone fraud will remain essential.
