Video: Monorail stuck in Mumbai, people trapped inside having trouble breathing

Mumbai Monorail: The administration said that there was a minor problem in power supply in a monorail train near Mysore Colony station. Our operations and maintenance teams are present at the spot.

More than 500 passengers were rescued after two monorail trains got stuck on the elevated track amid heavy rains in Mumbai on Tuesday evening. Many passengers trapped in the train complained of suffocation.

Officials said the rescue operation was completed after about four hours. They said the train had stopped due to a power outage and the problem was caused by the crowd.

Officials said both these monorail trains were carrying more passengers than their capacity since local train services were suspended due to heavy rains.

Passengers rescued using a crane

According to officials, a monorail train got stuck between Mysore Colony and Bhakti Park, and a crane had to be used to rescue more than 400 passengers on board. More than a hundred passengers were evacuated from another monorail train, who were successfully brought back to the nearby Wadala station, officials said.

14 people were treated on the spot

At around 6:15 pm, there was chaos in the monorail train stuck between Mysore Colony and Bhakti Park station. 15 passengers complained of suffocation due to power and AC system failure. Officials said that 14 people were treated on the spot, while a girl was admitted to the hospital and her condition is stable.

Passenger safety is top priority- CM Fadnavis

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis wrote on his Instagram handle that there is no need for anyone to panic as everyone will be evacuated safely. He said that the incident will be investigated. He further wrote that due to some technical reasons, a monorail is stuck between Chembur and Bhakti Park. All agencies including MMRDA (Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority), fire department and municipal bodies have reached the spot. The safety of all passengers is being given top priority.

Rescue operation lasted for one hour

Passengers said the train halted around 6:15 pm and it took an hour for rescue operations to begin. In an initial press statement, Mumbai Monorail said there was a minor problem with power supply in the train.
