India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) has become a global symbol of fast, secure, and cashless transactions. What started as a domestic digital payment revolution is now rapidly expanding across international borders, allowing Indian travelers to make payments abroad without the hassle of carrying cash or exchanging currency.
Today, UPI-based payment systems are active in nine countries, and the network continues to grow steadily, strengthening India’s position in global fintech.
Bhutan: The First International UPI Success Story
Bhutan was the first country outside India to adopt UPI. The system is now accepted at over 20,000 merchant locations across the country. Indian tourists can use UPI for shopping, hotel stays, trekking services, and more. Bhutan’s successful adoption played a key role in encouraging other countries to integrate UPI technology.
France: UPI Enters Europe
France became the first European nation to introduce UPI in February 2024, through a partnership between NPCI International and Lyra. One of the early use cases includes payments on the Eiffel Tower’s official booking platform. While cash is still widely used in France, UPI has made transactions much easier for Indian tourists.
Mauritius, Nepal, and Sri Lanka: Smooth Regional Expansion
UPI has also expanded across key travel destinations:
-
Mauritius: Launched alongside RuPay in February 2024, enabling digital payments across the island
-
Nepal: Integrated UPI through partnerships involving NPCI International and local payment networks, allowing apps like Google Pay, PhonePe, and Paytm to function
-
Sri Lanka: Connected via the LankaQR system, enabling direct payments from Indian bank accounts without needing physical cash
Singapore: Real-Time Cross-Border Payments
Singapore was one of the earliest countries to integrate UPI with its PayNow system in 2023. This allows instant, real-time transfers between Indian and Singaporean bank accounts. Payments for shopping, dining, and services have become seamless, eliminating currency exchange hassles and reducing transaction delays.
UAE and Qatar: Expanding Reach in the Middle East
-
United Arab Emirates (UAE) launched UPI services in July 2024, allowing payments across more than 200,000 merchant terminals
-
Qatar introduced UPI in September 2025 through collaboration between NPCI and Qatar National Bank, making travel easier for Indian visitors
Cambodia: The Newest Addition
In June 2026, Cambodia joined the UPI ecosystem through a cross-border QR payment system developed by NPCI International Payments Limited and ACLEDA Bank. Indian travelers can now use UPI at multiple merchant outlets across the country.
Why UPI Is a Game-Changer for International Travel
The global expansion of UPI offers several major benefits:
-
No need to carry large amounts of cash
-
Faster and more secure transactions
-
Familiar payment system for Indian travelers
-
Reduced dependency on currency exchange counters
-
Seamless digital payments across borders
While users may still incur bank-specific foreign transaction charges or currency conversion fees, UPI significantly simplifies international spending.
Final Thoughts
From Bhutan to France and Singapore to Cambodia, UPI is steadily transforming into a global payment bridge for Indian travelers. As more countries join the network, India’s digital payment ecosystem is set to play an even bigger role in shaping the future of global fintech.
