International Desk: America has now prepared to launch a major attack on the economic front regarding the Ukraine war. President Donald Trump has openly come out in support of the bill to impose tariffs up to 500 percent on countries buying oil from Russia. This step is believed to increase direct pressure on many countries including India. US President Donald Trump has supported the bill to impose heavy tariffs up to 500 percent on countries buying oil from Russia. The purpose of this proposal is to put severe economic pressure on those countries which are helping Russia in the ongoing war in Ukraine by buying cheap Russian oil.
US Senator Lindsey Graham stated that this bipartisan bill would empower President Trump to take tough action against countries like China, India, and Brazil. According to Graham, this bill could prove to be the strongest tool to make sanctions on Russia more effective. Graham stated that Ukraine is making concessions for peace, while President Vladimir Putin is merely making statements and the war continues. Therefore, it is necessary to economically weaken Putin’s “war machine” by imposing heavy tariffs on countries that buy oil from Russia.
The proposed legislation, the Sanctioning Russia Act of 2025, would impose tariffs of up to 500 percent on the secondary purchase and resale of Russian oil. It has the support of a majority of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and is expected to be voted on next week. Graham claimed that India has reduced its purchases of Russian oil following the 25 percent tariff already imposed by the US on India. He said that this tariff pressure is having an impact, and that is why countries like India are now reconsidering their energy decisions.
