T20 World Cup 2026: ICC Raises Concerns Over Pakistan’s Conditional Participation After India Match Boycott

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has responded to the Pakistan government’s decision directing its national team to take part conditionally in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, following Pakistan’s announcement that it will boycott its group-stage match against India.

In a statement issued on Sunday night, the ICC said it is awaiting formal discussions with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to better understand the situation. However, the global governing body made it clear that conditional participation goes against the core principles of an international sporting event, where all qualified teams are expected to compete on equal terms within the tournament schedule.

ICC Issues Strong Statement

The ICC emphasized that its tournaments are built on the values of integrity, fairness, consistency, and competitive balance. It noted that any form of conditional participation undermines the spirit and sanctity of global competitions.

While acknowledging the role of national governments in shaping policy decisions, the ICC stated that such a move is not in the best interests of international cricket or its global fan base, including millions of supporters in Pakistan.

The ICC further urged the PCB to carefully consider the broader consequences of this decision, warning that it could have long-term implications for cricket in the country and affect the global cricket ecosystem, of which Pakistan is an integral member.

ICC Calls for Resolution

Reiterating its priority, the ICC stressed the importance of the successful conduct of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, calling it a shared responsibility of all member nations. The governing body expressed hope that the PCB would work toward a solution that safeguards the interests of players, fans, and all stakeholders involved.

Pakistan to Skip India Match

Earlier on Sunday, Pakistan officially announced its decision to boycott its high-profile group-stage match against India. However, the government has approved Pakistan’s participation in the rest of the tournament, which is scheduled to begin on February 7, 2026.
