VVS Laxman Sends Clear Message to Vaibhav Suryavanshi: 'Fitness Will Decide How Far He Goes'

Teenage batting sensation Vaibhav Suryavanshi may have ended the Zimbabwe T20I series as the Player of the Series, but Team India's support staff believes his journey has only just begun. While praising the youngster's fearless batting, head coach VVS Laxman also delivered an important piece of advice—improving fitness must now become his top priority.

According to Laxman, talent alone is not enough to build a long and successful international career.

Laxman's Advice After the Series

Following India's series victory, Laxman applauded Suryavanshi for his performances but stressed that physical fitness is the one area where the youngster still has significant room for improvement.

The coach revealed that during one of the matches, Suryavanshi wanted to continue fielding despite picking up a knock. However, the team's medical staff decided to take him off the field as a precaution.

Laxman said the management wants the young batter to focus on becoming stronger physically so that he can cope with the demands of international cricket over the long term.

Why Fitness Matters

Modern cricket demands much more than aggressive batting.

A player's fitness affects running between the wickets, fielding standards, recovery from injuries, and the ability to perform consistently across long tours and multiple formats. It also helps players maintain their intensity during high-pressure matches.

For a young cricketer like Suryavanshi, building strength, endurance, and agility will be just as important as improving his batting skills.

Learning From the Best

Several of India's greatest cricketers have highlighted the importance of fitness throughout their careers.

Players like Virat Kohli transformed their game by maintaining exceptional fitness standards, allowing them to perform consistently across Tests, ODIs, and T20Is. Similar dedication could help Suryavanshi maximise his immense potential in the years ahead.

A Breakthrough Series

Suryavanshi enjoyed a dream series against Zimbabwe, finishing as the leading run-scorer.

His performances included:

  • 151 runs in the series

  • Average: 50.33

  • Strike rate: 196.10

  • Nine sixes, the most by any player in the series

His explosive batting earned him the Player of the Series award, making him one of the youngest players to receive the honour in international cricket.

The Road Ahead

Vaibhav Suryavanshi has already shown that he possesses the talent and confidence to succeed at the highest level. However, Team India's coaching staff believes the next phase of his development depends on improving his overall fitness and physical conditioning.

If he continues to develop both his skills and athleticism, the young batter could become a key player for India across formats in the future.
