Geetanjali J. Angmo, the wife of environmentalist and innovator Sonam Wangchuk, has filed a petition in the Supreme Court seeking her husband’s release. Wangchuk, who has been lodged in Jodhpur jail since September 26 under the National Security Act (NSA), was arrested following violent clashes in Ladakh that left at least four people dead. According to records, Angmo’s petition was submitted on Thursday, October 2.
Her move comes a day after she appealed to President Droupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, among others, for immediate intervention. Angmo also sent letters to Ladakh Lieutenant Governor Kavinder Gupta, Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal, and the Leh District Collector, copies of which she shared publicly on Twitter.
Geetanjali has strongly criticized the government over Wangchuk’s detention, claiming that he is being wrongly portrayed as a “traitor” and unfairly accused of espionage. “There’s a kind of spying narrative being pushed against us. We’ve already submitted all relevant documents to the CBI and the Income Tax Department, yet attempts are being made to defame Sonam and undermine the movement for Ladakh’s inclusion in the Sixth Schedule,” she alleged.
Her reaction followed remarks by Leh Police, who had mentioned Wangchuk’s visit to Pakistan and suggested possible links with the neighboring country. Angmo dismissed the claim, clarifying that Wangchuk attended a legitimate climate conference in Pakistan earlier this year organized by the United Nations and Dawn Media, where he even praised Prime Minister Modi’s ‘Mission Life’ initiative.
Wangchuk’s arrest under the NSA has sparked widespread protests, with demonstrators demanding that Ladakh be brought under the special protections of the Sixth Schedule. Meanwhile, 44 people have been arrested in connection with the September 24 clashes. Restrictions imposed under Section 163 of the BNSS in Leh were temporarily eased earlier this week to allow residents to purchase essential commodities.
