SIM Rules: The rules for purchasing new SIM cards will change from August 24, making it difficult to get a new number

The government is about to introduce new rules regarding the purchase of a new SIM card. If you already have multiple mobile numbers issued in your name, you may face difficulties. The central government's Department of Telecommunications has introduced new restrictions regarding mobile connections. Starting August 24, 2026, telecom companies will be prohibited from issuing new mobile connections to people who already have a set number of SIM cards in their name.

In most parts of India , there
is a limit of nine mobile connections per person. In Jammu and Kashmir, Assam, and the Northeastern states, the limit is lower, with a maximum of six mobile connections per person. This limit applies to all telecom companies combined.

What are the new instructions?
Under the new instructions of DOT, telecom companies will have to check how many numbers are already in the name of the person taking a new SIM. If the prescribed limit has been reached, then a new connection will not be issued. The most interesting thing about this new system is the verification done through photo. DOT's Digital Intelligence Platform i.e. DIP will be used in this. According to the report, from August 23, the photographs of those people who already have a fixed number of mobile connections in their name will be made available to telecom companies.
