Why do we offer water to Shiva?

This question must have come to your mind: why do we offer water to Lord Shiva? The importance of offering water to Lord Shiva has been explained in the Shiva Purana. According to its story, when Dev Lok, i.e., heaven, became devoid of wealth, the gods got the suggestion of churning the ocean. All the gods could not churn the ocean alone, so they included the demons as well.

When the demons and gods churned the ocean together, the first thing that came out of it was Halahal, i.e., poison. That poison loomed over the existence of the entire world. No one came forward in this hour of crisis, so Mahadev took the responsibility. For the welfare of the universe, Lord Shiva Shambhu drank that poison. Shiva was called Neelkanth due to holding that poison in his throat.

The poison was so poisonous that it had no ill effect on Lord Shiva. Adishakti Jagdamba anointed Shiva with water. Seeing this, all the other gods and goddesses offered water to Shiva. Shiva got coolness by offering water, and the effect of the poison diminished, and Mahadev became happy. After this incident, the tradition of offering water to Lord Shiva started. Lord Shiva becomes happy by offering water.

The right way to offer water to the Shivling

1. On the day you have to offer water to Lord Shiva, wake up early in the morning and take a bath. Wear clean clothes. Purify yourself by sipping water.

3. Then go to the Shivling in the Shiva temple or the puja room. Stand facing the east or north-east corner. Hold that vessel with both hands and offer water.

4. Water should not be offered on the Shivling at a high speed at once. A thin stream of water should be offered slowly on the Shivling. Do not offer water by standing straight; offer water by bending a little so that the water falling on the Shivling does not fall on your feet.

5. While offering water to the Shivling, keep chanting the mantra Om Namah Shivaya. When the water is finished, bow down to Mahadev.

6. After that, offer Belpatra, Bhaang, Dhatura, Aak flowers, Shami leaves, honey, Akshat, incense, lamp, fragrance etc. to Lord Shiva.

7. Move a little away from the Shivling in the temple. Sit and recite Shiv Chalisa, after that do the Aarti of Lord Shiva. At the end, pray to Lord Bholenath for forgiveness for mistakes or shortcomings in worship and Jalabhishek. After that, express your wishes to him.
