Sakat Chauth, also known as Maghi Chauth, Sankashti Chaturthi, or Tilkuta Chauth, is one of the most significant fasts observed during the Hindu month of Magh. This sacred vrat is primarily performed by mothers for the well-being, protection, and prosperity of their children. In 2026, Sakat Chauth holds special importance due to the formation of three auspicious yogas, along with a brief presence of Bhadra, making it essential to follow the correct date and puja timings carefully.
Importance of Sakat Chauth
Sakat Chauth is counted among the four most important Chaturthi fasts of the year. On this day, devotees worship Lord Ganesha, Sankata Mata, and Chandra Dev (the Moon). It is believed that observing this fast with proper rituals helps remove obstacles from a child’s life and brings happiness, health, and prosperity to the family.
The vrat can be observed either as a nirjala fast (without water) or as a phalahar fast (fruit-based). The fast is traditionally broken after offering Arghya to the Moon in the evening.
Correct Date of Sakat Chauth 2026
According to the Hindu Panchang, the Magh Krishna Paksha Chaturthi will begin on Tuesday, January 6, 2026, at 8:01 AM and will end on Wednesday, January 7, 2026, at 6:52 AM.
Although Hindu festivals are generally observed based on Udaya Tithi, in the case of Sakat Chauth, Moonrise during Chaturthi is considered more important than the Udaya Tithi. Since the Moonrise occurs on January 6 during Chaturthi Tithi, Sakat Chauth will be observed on Tuesday, January 6, 2026.
On this day, devotees should complete Lord Ganesha’s worship first and then offer water to the Moon after moonrise to conclude the fast.

Three Auspicious Yogas on Sakat Chauth 2026

Bhadra Period on Sakat Chauth
Along with auspicious yogas, Bhadra will also be present on Sakat Chauth for a brief duration of 46 minutes. Bhadra will begin at 7:15 AM and end at 8:01 AM.
Since Bhadra’s Vaas is on Earth, it is advised to avoid any auspicious work, puja, or rituals during this period. Devotees should ensure that worship and important religious activities are performed only after Bhadra ends.
Spiritual Significance of the Fast
It is believed that observing Sakat Chauth with devotion helps eliminate obstacles, protects children from hardships, and brings peace to family life. Worship of Lord Ganesha on this day is especially powerful, as he is known as the remover of obstacles and giver of wisdom.
