When is Rang Panchami 2026?
According to religious texts, the festival of Rang Panchami is celebrated on the fifth day of the Krishna Paksha (dark fortnight) of the month of Chaitra. This time, the date will begin at 7:17 pm on Saturday, March 7, and will last until 9:11 pm on Sunday, March 8. Since sunrise on the fifth day will occur on Sunday, March 8, the festival of Rang Panchami will be celebrated on this day.
Why do we celebrate Rangpanchami?
According to popular legends, there was a demon named Hiranyakashipu who considered Lord Vishnu his enemy. However, his son Prahlad was a great devotee of Lord Vishnu. When Hiranyakashipu learned of this, he tried many times to kill his son, but failed. Finally, he made Prahlad sit in a fire with his sister Holika to kill him. Prahlad and Holika sat in the fire for five days. During this time, Holika died, and Prahlad survived. When people saw this, they were filled with excitement and joy, and everyone celebrated with colors. Since then, the festival of Rangpanchami has been celebrated.

On the occasion of Rangpanchami, a traditional Gair procession is held in Indore, Madhya Pradesh. This Gair is organized by the local administration. Significantly, 400,000 to 500,000 people participate in the procession. This is why it has been included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. Currently, this Gair has become a hallmark of Indore.
