Qatar Cannot Retaliate Against Israel, US Plays Its Hand

Since 7 October 2023, Israel has conducted attacks in seven countries, and Qatar has now become the latest target. Recently, Israeli forces carried out a series of strikes in Doha, the Qatari capital, aimed at a Hamas meeting convened to discuss a Gaza ceasefire. The attack has once again escalated tensions across the Middle East, drawing global attention. While the region reels from the incident, the United States is also closely monitoring the situation. US President Donald Trump clarified in a statement that the decision to strike was made by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, not by him.

On the morning of the attack, US military officials observed Israeli jets heading toward the Gulf and immediately sought explanations. However, the missiles had already hit their target—a gathering of Hamas leaders discussing Trump’s new peace proposal. This unexpected strike disrupted Qatar’s role as a mediator in the Israel-Hamas conflict, effectively turning its territory into a battlefield.

The White House expressed concern over the attack. Trump publicly stated that he supported the broader peace process but emphasized that an assault on Qatari soil would harm both American and Israeli interests. His press secretary, Caroline Levitt, highlighted Qatar’s importance as a key ally in maintaining regional stability. Trump personally called both the Emir and the Prime Minister of Qatar to assure them that such an incident would not recur. He also contacted Netanyahu, urging him to continue the peace process and publicly clarified on social media that the strike was Netanyahu’s decision alone. Furthermore, Trump instructed Secretary of State Marco Rubio to expedite the US-Qatar defense agreement, signaling Washington’s intent to protect its ally. Analysts now believe that due to this strong US intervention, Qatar is unlikely to retaliate against Israel for the attack.
