Punjab Farmers Embrace Land Pooling Policy, Call It a 'Model for the Future'

The Punjab government’s land pooling policy has garnered widespread support from farmers across the state, who see it as a transformative and profitable opportunity. While opposition parties and the builder lobby have voiced resistance, citing political motives and vested interests, thousands of farmers in districts like Patiala, Mohali, Ludhiana, Amritsar, and Ferozepur have voluntarily opted to contribute their land under the scheme.
Unlike traditional land acquisition, this policy allows farmers to retain ownership stakes in urban development projects. For every acre of land given, farmers receive developed residential plots (1000 sq yards) and commercial SCO plots (200 sq yards). These plots can be sold, developed into housing or market complexes, or leased out for long-term income.
Farmers Speak Out
Farmers are calling the scheme transparent, voluntary, and empowering. Rajendra Kumar from Patiala stated he gave his land without any pressure and views the policy as one that enhances land value and secures his family’s financial future. Another farmer, who offered 9 acres, claimed that the returns through the scheme far exceed any private deal—and importantly, come with zero commissions or middlemen.
In the first week alone, farmers in Patiala have pooled 150 acres, while over 50 farmers in Mohali have joined. Encouraging feedback is also coming in from Amritsar, Moga, Sangrur, Jalandhar, Nawanshahr, Bathinda, and several other districts.
No Forced Acquisition, Only Partnership
One of the most appreciated aspects of the policy is that there is no forced acquisition. Farmers are partners in development, not just sellers. Many believe this approach prevents exploitation by brokers and builders who earlier bought land cheaply and profited disproportionately.
A local resident and father of an NRI noted that past irregularities by builders led to poor infrastructure. But with this government-led development, urban estates will meet world-class standards, benefiting both locals and returning NRIs.
A New Path for Urban Development
This land pooling policy is now being viewed as a model for inclusive, transparent, and balanced urban development. It empowers farmers, increases transparency, and promises well-planned infrastructure growth across Punjab.
Farmers now consider themselves not just landowners, but co-developers of the cities of tomorrow.
