After a cesarean section, women may experience some difficulties recovering due to the hormonal changes that occur after delivery. Commonly, women experience bloating, gas, and abdominal heaviness after surgery. Dr. Sukirti Jain, Consultant Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Cloudnine Group of Hospitals in Navi Mumbai, explained the reasons for this to OnlyMyHealth.
Dr. Jain said that this problem after surgery is usually temporary and resolves gradually with proper care. However, it is important to understand the underlying causes and take appropriate action.
Why do women suffer from bloating after surgery?
Dr. “Obstetric surgery is a major surgery and can require a long recovery time. After surgery, anesthesia and painkillers are often given. These medications can temporarily disrupt normal bowel function. When metabolism slows, food and gas cannot move through the intestines normally. This causes gas, bloating, and a feeling of heaviness. Women may experience bloating after surgery.”
Less physical activity:
According to Dr. Sukirti Jain, "In the initial days after surgery, women tend to be less active and rest for long periods of time. This slows down the digestive process and can make it difficult to pass gas. That's why I recommend women take light walks after surgery, which helps with passing gas."
Gas due to constipation
Dr. Sukirti Jain says, “Constipation can be a major cause of bloating after surgery. Many women avoid going to the toilet due to pain or do not drink enough water. This can harden the stool, which can increase gas and bloating. Bloating is common in women suffering from constipation after surgery.”
How to prevent bloating after surgery
A brisk walk every day improves bowel function and helps expel gas from the stomach.
Drinking enough water every day reduces the risk of constipation.
Eating fiber-rich foods like fruits, vegetables, oatmeal, and whole grains improves digestion.
