To reduce risks in farming and stabilize farmers' incomes, the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana was launched in 2016. This scheme not only covers losses to standing crops but also compensates for losses incurred due to delayed sowing or post-harvest losses.
Key benefits of this plan
The biggest feature of this plan is its low premium and comprehensive coverage.
Minimum premium: Farmers pay only 2 percent for Kharif crops, 1.5 percent for Rabi crops, and 5 percent for commercial/horticultural crops. The remaining premium is borne by the government.
Comprehensive risk coverage: Covers disasters such as hailstorms, landslides, floods, drought, pest attacks, and natural fires.
Protection even after harvest: Farmers can still claim if the crop kept for drying in the field for the next 14 days after harvest is damaged due to cyclone or unseasonal rain.
Who can apply? (Eligibility)
To avail the benefits of the scheme, some basic rules need to be fulfilled:
Farmers from notified areas: The scheme is applicable only for those areas and crops which have been notified by the state government.
Land ownership: Applicants must have valid land documents. Even if you are a sharecropper or tenant farmer, you can still benefit by providing relevant documents.
Voluntary participation: This scheme is now voluntary for all farmers. If you have a Kisan Credit Card (KCC) from a bank, you can opt out of the insurance by submitting it in writing to the bank.
