If you own a bike or a car, an important fuel-related change is coming your way—and it will directly impact both your budget and your vehicle’s performance. From April 1, 2026, petrol sold across India will be E20 petrol with a minimum RON 95 rating. This means petrol will now contain up to 20% ethanol, marking a major shift in the country’s fuel policy.

What is E20 petrol and why is it being introduced?

E20 petrol is fuel blended with 20 percent ethanol, which is mainly produced from crops such as sugarcane and corn. The decision has been taken by the Government of India to reduce dependency on crude oil imports, lower carbon emissions, and support farmers by increasing demand for ethanol.

India had already achieved its 10% ethanol blending target ahead of schedule. Encouraged by this success, the government is now moving toward E20 to promote cleaner combustion and a greener environment.

What will be the impact on new and old vehicles?

According to automobile industry experts, most vehicles manufactured between 2023 and 2025 are already E20-compliant. Owners of newer bikes and cars are unlikely to face technical problems.

However, older vehicles may see a 3–7% drop in mileage. Ethanol has slightly lower energy content than pure petrol, which can lead to marginally higher fuel consumption. While engines won’t fail immediately, long-term use in non-compatible vehicles could increase wear if proper fuel standards are not met.

Why is RON 95 petrol being made mandatory?

To safeguard engines, the government has mandated a minimum RON 95 (Research Octane Number) standard. RON measures petrol’s resistance to engine knocking, which occurs when fuel burns unevenly or prematurely. Knocking can reduce performance and cause serious engine damage over time.

Higher RON fuel ensures smoother combustion, better engine efficiency, and longer engine life—especially important when ethanol blending is increased.

Nationwide rollout of E20 petrol

In a notification issued on February 17, the Petroleum Ministry clarified that all oil marketing companies must supply E20 petrol with minimum RON 95, following norms set by the Bureau of Indian Standards. This rule will apply across all states and union territories, although temporary exemptions may be granted to select regions under special circumstances.

With this change becoming mandatory in 2026, vehicle owners should start checking whether their bike or car is E20-compatible. Consulting the manufacturer or service center in advance can help avoid future issues.
