Weight gain not only affects how we look and fit into our favourite clothes, but it also increases the risk of lifestyle-related health problems. Regular exercise is important, but not everyone has the time or energy to go to the gym or follow a strict workout routine every day. The good news is—you can turn your kitchen into a mini workout zone without changing into gym clothes.
Daily kitchen chores can help burn calories, improve flexibility, and keep muscles and joints active. This is especially beneficial for women as they grow older. Fitness trainer and nutritionist Logopreetika Srinivasan often shares practical ways to stay fit, and she recently revealed how simple movements in the kitchen can help you stay active and healthy.
Sit smart while cutting vegetables
Most kitchen work is done standing, but if you need to sit while chopping vegetables or preparing ingredients, avoid sitting on a chair. Instead, sit on the floor in Padmasana or Sukhasana. Continue your work in this posture. It helps improve posture and keeps your back, hamstrings, hips, and glutes flexible.
Move while cooking
When vegetables or rice are cooking and you’re waiting, don’t just stand still. Lift your heels slightly, stretch your arms upward, and create a Tadasana-like posture. You can also walk lightly around the kitchen or do a few gentle squats. These small movements improve blood circulation and help boost metabolism.
Lift items the right way
When picking up items from the floor, many people bend directly from the waist, which puts pressure on the back and neck. Instead, squat down and lift the object using your legs. This movement resembles Malasana and helps protect the spine while strengthening the thighs, hips, and lower body—especially beneficial for women.
Practice breathing while cleaning
Cleaning tasks like wiping the kitchen slab or stove involve repetitive movements. While doing such comfortable tasks, stay relaxed and focus on slow, deep breathing. Conscious breathing during work supports mental calmness along with physical well-being.
Make it a daily habit
By turning routine household chores into mindful movements, you can burn calories without extra effort. These mini workouts help improve strength, keep joints healthy, enhance mood, and prevent weight gain—all while managing your daily responsibilities.
