When we're sick, our bodies give us some warning signs. But we often ignore these symptoms. However, a change in the color of our nails can be an important warning. Especially if they appear blue, don't take it lightly.
Dr. Vignesh, senior general physician at Yashoda Hospital in Hyderabad, explains that the main cause of blue fingernails is a lack of oxygen in the body or a lack of proper blood supply to the fingers. In medical terms, this condition is called cyanosis.
Why do nails turn blue?
According to doctors, there can be many reasons behind blue nails.
Effects of Cold
In winter or very cold weather, the veins in the fingers constrict. This temporarily reduces blood flow, and the nails may appear slightly blue. Usually, this problem subsides on its own as the body warms up. However, if this condition occurs frequently or persists for a long time, it should not be ignored.
Heart Problems:
Sometimes, people who have had a heart attack may develop blue nails. This is because the heart is unable to pump oxygen-rich blood properly throughout the body. In such cases, a change in nail color can be an important sign.
Lung diseases like
asthma, COPD, or other respiratory problems can cause difficulty breathing. This can lead to insufficient oxygen supply to the body, which can affect the color of your nails. Ignoring these symptoms for too long can be dangerous.
If your hemoglobin
is low or you have other blood problems, oxygen cannot be transported properly to the body. This can cause your nails to appear blue.
Why is only one nail blue?
Sometimes, only one fingernail appears blue. In this case, the cause could be an injury. Pressure on the finger, tight shoes, or blood pooling under the nail can cause the nail to appear blue or black.
If several nails or the entire hand turn blue at the same time, accompanied by dizziness, chest pain, or difficulty breathing, this could be a serious condition. It's crucial to consult a doctor immediately .
