Prime Minister Narendra Modi held comprehensive talks with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer in Mumbai on Thursday, focusing on strengthening India-UK cooperation in defence, security, trade, and critical technology.
UK Delegation and Context
Starmer arrived in Mumbai on Wednesday with a delegation of 125 business leaders, entrepreneurs, and academics for a two-day visit. His trip comes nearly two and a half months after India and the UK signed a landmark free trade agreement (FTA) during Modi’s visit to London in July. The FTA aims to expand market access, reduce tariffs, and is expected to double bilateral trade by 2030.
Significance of the Talks
This meeting was the first between the two leaders following the FTA. Starmer described the trade agreement as a “launchpad” for bilateral growth, noting that India is projected to become the world’s third-largest economy by 2028. “Trade with India will become faster and cheaper, and the opportunities ahead are unmatched,” he said.
Potential Security Discussions
The talks are also expected to cover security concerns, including the activities of pro-Khalistan elements operating from British soil and the extradition of high-profile fugitives such as Vijay Mallya and Nirav Modi.
Starmer’s Engagement in Mumbai
On Wednesday, PM Starmer, along with football legend Michael Owen, visited the Cooperage football ground in Mumbai to interact with young Indian football players and coaches during a Premier League Community Showcase event. This marks Starmer’s first visit to India since taking office in July last year.
