Microsoft has started another round of layoffs, but the company is reportedly offering a significant severance package to many affected employees in the US. Some employees could receive compensation equivalent to nearly nine months of their basic salary, depending on their job level and tenure.
According to a report by Business Insider, around 4,800 employees have been impacted in the latest layoffs, accounting for roughly 2.1% of Microsoft’s global workforce.
What Severance Package Will Microsoft Employees Receive?
For eligible US employees, the severance package reportedly includes:
- At least 60 days of basic salary while remaining on the company payroll
- Additional severance pay based on position and years of service
- Total compensation of up to 39 weeks of basic salary for many employees
The final amount depends on the employee’s internal level and time spent at the company.
How Is Severance Calculated?
Microsoft’s severance structure varies according to employee levels:
- Level 64 and below: One week of basic pay for every six months worked at Microsoft
- Levels 65 to 67: Two weeks of basic pay for every six months worked
- Senior executives: Receive compensation under separate plans
This means employees with longer service periods and higher roles may receive larger payouts.
Additional Benefits Beyond Salary
The support package reportedly includes more than just salary payments. Eligible employees may also receive:
- Stock vesting benefits for up to 6 or 12 months, depending on tenure
- Six months of paid health insurance coverage
- Option to continue healthcare coverage for an additional year through COBRA at their own expense
The package is similar in structure to a voluntary retirement offer Microsoft introduced earlier, although healthcare benefits differ for recent layoffs.
Why Is Microsoft Reducing Jobs?
The layoffs come as Microsoft continues to invest heavily in artificial intelligence. The company is reportedly increasing spending on AI infrastructure, including:
- Data centers
- Cloud computing capacity
- AI-related technology development
With massive investments planned in AI, Microsoft and several other technology companies have been restructuring teams and reducing roles in some areas while increasing hiring in AI-focused divisions.
A Difficult Transition for Employees
While layoffs create uncertainty for affected workers, Microsoft’s reported severance package is considered among the more substantial offerings in the technology sector. The company’s restructuring reflects a broader shift in the tech industry, where businesses are redirecting resources toward artificial intelligence and automation.
