Nearly a week after the shocking gangrape of a law student in Kolkata, the college administration has finally taken disciplinary action against those involved. Acting on directives from the Education Department (Vikas Bhavan), the law college has terminated the services of Monojit Mishra—the main accused and a politically influential former student leader—and expelled two other students linked to the case.
Who Are the Accused?
-
Monojit Mishra: A temporary staffer, former student of the college, and a known leader aligned with the ruling party. Despite not being a student anymore, he held considerable influence on campus.
-
Zaib Ahmed & Pramit Mukherjee: Currently enrolled law students, both arrested and now expelled following their alleged involvement in the crime.
What Prompted the Action?
For six days after the incident, there was widespread criticism of the college’s silence, especially given the political clout of the accused. The delay in action raised concerns about the protection of students and the environment within the college. Following mounting pressure and instructions from higher authorities, the governing body—led by TMC MLA Ashok Kumar Deb—convened to take decisive steps.
Key Actions Taken:
-
Monojit Mishra's termination from college employment.
-
Expulsion of Zaib Ahmed and Pramit Mukherjee from the law college.
-
Ban on outsider entry into the campus to prevent further misuse of access.
-
Initiation of Bar Council action to revoke Monojit Mishra’s license to practice law.
-
Audit of security measures, including a show-cause notice to the security agency over lapses.
-
Financial aid offered to the survivor for medical treatment.
Disturbing Revelations:
It was discovered that Monojit Mishra had access to campus CCTV footage on his mobile phone, further revealing how deeply entrenched he was in the college’s inner workings. Allegations have also surfaced of him taking money during admissions, worsening the case against him.
Campus Temporarily Closed:
The college administration has temporarily shut down campus operations, though the exam schedule remains unchanged. The administrative office will stay open for form submissions.
