Jio Shocks Users: Popular ₹249 Plan Discontinued, Limited Options Left

Reliance Jio has surprised its prepaid users by discontinuing the popular ₹249 plan, which offered 1GB data per day at an affordable price. The move by Mukesh Ambani’s telecom giant has left many low-data users disappointed, as this plan was one of the cheapest daily data packs in Jio’s portfolio.

The ₹249 plan has now been removed from Jio’s official website and the MyJio app, signaling that the company is reshuffling its prepaid offerings.

Still Available at Select Stores

According to a Telecom Talk report, while the plan is not visible online, customers may still be able to recharge it through Jio retail outlets and POS stores for a limited time.

Details of the Discontinued Plan

  • Price: ₹249

  • Validity: 28 days

  • Benefits: 1GB high-speed data per day, unlimited calling, 100 SMS/day

This plan was especially popular among users with moderate data needs who wanted a balance of affordability and daily benefits.

What Are the Alternatives?

Currently, Jio does not offer another 28-day plan with 1GB/day benefits. Instead, users have two main alternatives:

  1. ₹189 Plan

    • Validity: 28 days

    • Data: 2GB total (no daily limit)

    • Unlimited calling + 100 SMS/day

  2. ₹299 Plan

    • Validity: 28 days

    • Data: 1.5GB/day

    • Unlimited calling + 100 SMS/day

Effectively, customers will now have to pay more for similar daily data benefits.

Jio’s Market Position

Despite discontinuing affordable plans, Jio continues to strengthen its market dominance.

  • TRAI Data (June 2025):

    • Jio added 19 lakh new subscribers

    • Airtel gained 7.6 lakh

    • VI lost 2.1 lakh

    • BSNL lost 3.05 lakh

Every month, Jio remains the top gainer in new wireless subscribers, even as it tweaks its prepaid portfolio.
